'Top Gun', 'Black Panther' advance on Oscar shortlist.

Blockbusters like "Top Gun: Maverick," "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and "Avatar: The Way of Water" and pop stars like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Rihanna have moved one step closer to earning Oscar nominations.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Wednesday announced the shortlists for the 95th Academy Awards in 10 categories.

Alejandro González Iñárritu's Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths was among 15 shortlisted films in the international film category, one of the most competitive.

The inclusion of Joyland marks the first time Pakistan has made the shortlist. With the exception of Iñárritu, most of the directors are also first-timers on the shortlist.

Zafar Panahi was also not selected to represent Iran, which was not selected out of 15, and Russia did not submit a film this year.
